The existing pergola on this house was about to collapse due to being constructed with untreated wood products. While the pergola provided some level of relief from the sun and heat, a permanent roof was preferred. Unfortunately, not only was the pergola ceiling constructed from the wrong material, but so was the square wood columns. Due to the damage, layering on exterior-friendly material was not an option as it would require reworking the recently installed Trex railing. Thus, installing new, load-bearing PVC square panel columns was the best route to go. The exterior design was straightforward and simply required matching the adjacent shed roof, siding, and trim. The homeowner chose to go with a T&G ceiling product on the interior that was applied to the underside of the rafters in order to allow space for recessed can lighting. The result was a shaded, maintenance-free, wallet-friendly roofed structure that tied in seamlessly with the existing house.
